Merchants of Doubt

Merchants of Doubt by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway

This book describes how a handful of senior, highly influential scientists in the United States have worked over the past 30 or 40 years to obscure the truth on the issues of Smoking and Cancer, Acid Rain, Ozone destruction and Global Warming. The way they used their high level political and industrial contacts and their effective manipulation of the media makes chilling reading.

The book is thoroughly researched and accurately presented. For instance, the spreading of false information by Frederick Seitz, Fred Singer and the Wall Street Journal regarding the final version of the IPCC’s second report in 1996 is a part of the story in which I was personally involved and I can vouch for the accuracy of its detail. Genuine scientific enquiry has suffered and is still suffering from the orchestrated large scale manipulation the book describes. This book should be essential reading for every one concerned about the truth regarding Global warming and Climate Change.
