John Ray received his grammar school education at the Jesus Chapel, St. Michael’s Church, Braintree, Essex. It was here that he learned his Latin, trained his remarkable memory and developed his beautiful hand-writing.

This garden, in the style of the 17th century and incorporating the initials J.R. commemorates the six years John Ray spent as a pupil of the school. Like the John Ray Memorial Garden at Bocking End, the infill of the geometric design includes native plants as well as some species which had been introduced to this country before 1700.
